Kumasi, March 31, – Four Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the Volta Region have received GH₵1.1 million (USD 100,000) from UNDP Ghana to drive biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community-led development.
The grants, awarded under the Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative (COMDEKS)—funded by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and the Global Environment Facility (GEF)—will support ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, waste management, climate adaptation, and SDG localisation in the Afadzato South socio-ecological landscape.
Dr. Joseph Appiah-Agyapong, Chair of the National Steering Committee, emphasised results-driven action: “Measurable community impacts will position these projects for scale-up and long-term environmental sustainability.”
Dr. Abdul-Razak Saeed, UNDP Ghana’s Head of Environment and Climate Unit, highlighted inclusion: “Engaging youth, women, and persons with disabilities is essential to ensure that no one is left behind.”
Beneficiaries pledged to translate the funding into practical, locally led solutions that protect ecosystems, enhance livelihoods, and build resilience. Mr. Pascal Benson Atislah, Executive Director of Accelerate Rural Development Organisation, said the grant “strengthens our resolve to deliver tangible, community-driven impact.”
Since 2012, COMDEKS has demonstrated the power of partnerships to turn global environmental commitments into concrete local action—showing that nature-based solutions and community engagement are key to biodiversity and climate resilience.
