Accra, March 31, – The Ga East Municipality is championing healthy eating as a frontline defence against disease, urging residents to make nutrition a daily priority.
At the climax of the Municipality’s inaugural Nutrition Week, Dr. Maame Yaa Nhyira Essel, Municipal Health Director, stressed: “Good nutrition isn’t just about filling your stomach—it fuels your brain, organs, and immunity. What we eat determines how well our bodies fight disease.”
Officials highlighted that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fiber, and water can drastically cut the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers, while poor nutrition can silently trigger deficiencies, fatigue, and weakened immunity.
The week-long celebration, themed “Nourish to Flourish: Promoting Optimal Nutrition for All”, included food demonstrations, community outreach, and market engagements to teach practical, affordable ways to prepare nutrient-rich meals.
Ms. Barikisu Haruna Zakaria, Municipal Nutrition Officer, noted the importance of proper nutrition at every life stage—from supporting children’s growth and adolescents’ energy needs to helping adults maintain health and the elderly prevent age-related illnesses.
Mr. Ebenezer Kwao, Assembly Member for Dome West, praised the initiative, saying: “Awareness about what we eat can prevent countless diseases. Getting nutrition right is a matter of life and health.”
Health authorities urged residents to choose natural, nutrient-rich foods, cut back on processed options, and commit to long-term dietary changes for stronger, healthier communities.
