Accra, April 24,– Parliament's Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee Chairman, Mr Shaibu Mahama (NDC-Daboya-Mankarigu), has described the previous Akufo-Addo administration's refusal to assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill as a "blessing in disguise," providing the Ninth Parliament opportunity to refine the controversial legislation.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on April 23, Mr Mahama said time had revealed gaps overlooked in the Eighth Parliament. "We can now incorporate, delete, amend, or reshape clauses to strengthen the bill," he stated, noting evolving societal dynamics since its initial consideration.
Divergent Views Emerge
Deputy Ranking Member Alhassan Suleman urged passing the bill unchanged, citing broad public acceptance. "Ghanaians view it as fit for purpose—no major tinkering needed," he insisted.
Principal sponsor MP Samuel Nartey George dismissed economic sanction fears, pointing to unaffected African nations with similar laws. He pressed the Committee for swift action toward President John Mahama's assent.
The stakeholder forum signals renewed legislative momentum for the divisive bill, balancing refinement calls against demands for immediate passage.
