Rice Farmers Threaten to Sell Farms to Galamsey Operators Over Unsold Produce

Twifo Afosua (C/R), April 24, – Rice farmers in Twifo Afosua, Twifo-Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region, have issued an ultimatum to sell their farmlands to illegal miners unless government urgently purchases their rice harvest.

The distressed farmers, who invested heavily through bank loans, face financial ruin with unsold produce rotting in storage. Mr Eric Offei, leader of the Twifo Praso Rice Farmers Cooperative Union, called for a dedicated Rice Board modeled after Cocoa and Gold Boards to guarantee market access and stabilise livelihoods.

Economic Desperation
Machine operator Mr Agya Yaw at Twifo Nuamakrom warned that rice farming promotion could curb youth unemployment and deter galamsey involvement. "Government must intervene urgently to prevent harsh decisions," he pleaded, highlighting the galamsey threat to food security.

The farmers' desperate measure underscores the critical intersection of agriculture, finance, and environmental protection in Ghana's rural economy.
