Accra, March 31, – The Office of Government Machinery has disclosed that GH¢21 million was paid to contractors for renovations at the Black Star Square, even though Ghana’s 67th Independence Day celebration was moved to the Eastern Region.
Mr. Abubakar Wayo, Chief Director of the Office, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday that the relocation decision came after contracts had already been awarded.
“Although the Independence Day celebration was relocated, the renovation works at Black Star Square became necessary to prepare the facility for the Presidential Inauguration,” he said.
He explained that halting the project was not an option as the directive came from higher authority, despite the original plan specifying Black Star Square as the venue.
