UMaT Launches e-Water Booth to Slash Single-Use Plastics

Tarkwa (W/R), March 29, — The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has unveiled its first e-water booth, a “water ATM” designed to reduce single-use plastics on campus and advance the institution toward a plastic-free future.

Developed by the Geological Engineering Department under the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies, the project aligns with the university’s Environmental and Safety Engineering Department plastic waste campaign.

Speaking at the commissioning under the theme “Water and Gender,” Dr. Kofi Adomako-Ansah, Planning Committee Chairman for World Water Day, said the initiative—funded by AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine—is anchored on the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

“Recycling operations in Ghana are limited, so the most practical step is to reduce plastic use,” Dr. Adomako-Ansah explained. He added that the first booth is currently for staff but plans are underway to expand access across the campus.

The e-water booth is strategically positioned near security personnel for maintenance oversight, with future installations planned at vantage points around the university.

Dr. Adomako-Ansah also revealed plans to extend the project to other mining sites and local communities, aiming to create a microcosm of a plastic-free society. Maintenance and operational management will be ensured, with contractors Urban Pace and Precision Works Engineering Limited installing solar panels at discounted rates.

He thanked So Nice Drinking Water for donating a monthly water supply and the university’s Works and Physical Infrastructure Directorate for supervision.

The launch drew participation from Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, UMaT Vice-Chancellor, officials from AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Gold Fields Ghana, Water Resource Commission, and students.
