Tamale, April 21, – Seven persons have been arrested by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team of the Ghana Police Service, popularly known as “Red Maria”, during an anti-drug operation in the Tamale Metropolis.
The operation, carried out on Monday, April 20, at about 2030 hours, led to the seizure of 40 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
A statement from the Northern Regional Police Command Public Relations Unit, copied to the press in Tamale, said the exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
It indicated that a 44-member team conducted coordinated swoops at identified drug hotspots, including Zogbeli and Kukuo, based on intelligence.
At Zogbeli, four suspects were arrested. They were identified as Sulemana Sualha, 20; Alhassan Ayisha, 25; Abdul Fatawu Damba, 16; and Mohammed Amin, 20, allegedly for possession and dealing in narcotic substances.
The operation continued at Kukuo, where Ibrahim Abdulai, 20, and Issah Abass, 17, were also picked up for similar offences.
The team later moved to Savelugu, where Ibrahim Osuman, 21, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activities. However, a search of his residence reportedly yielded no incriminating items.
The Police said all seven suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations.
