Nwawasu residents appeal for CHPS compound over rising snake bites

Nwawasu (Bono), April 21, – Residents of Nwawasu in the Sunyani Municipality are calling for the establishment of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound following increasing cases of snake bites in the area.

The appeal was made by Mr Awudu Razack, Chairman of the Nwawasu Unit Committee, who expressed concern over the growing health risk facing the farming community.

He said the community, which has a population of over 5,000 and is located near Atronie, currently lacks a nearby health facility, forcing residents to travel long distances—often by bicycle or on foot—to access care at the Atronie Health Centre during emergencies.

Mr Razack noted that the proposed CHPS compound would also serve surrounding communities, including Asamoakrom, Akenkensu, Kuffuor Camp, Ankamakrom and Tuobodom.

He described the situation as worrying, citing a recent incident in which a snake bite victim died while being transported to the Atronie Health Centre.

He also revealed that a relative who suffered a snake bite two months ago is still receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

“The snake bite cases are becoming too frequent and difficult for us to manage,” he said, adding that a local health facility would significantly improve emergency response and save lives.
