Nation Mourns as Bagbin Backs Probe into Fatal Tema Air Crash

Accra, March 29, – The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, has pledged legislative backing for a full investigation into the microlight aircraft crash that claimed the lives of two brothers at Tema on March 16.

He said establishing the facts behind the tragedy involving Captain Frank Amoanyi Donkor and Elijah Ofori Donkor would be critical in preventing future aviation incidents.

The brothers, aged 36 and 25, were laid to rest on Saturday after a solemn burial service at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Describing the incident as a national loss, the Speaker said the tragedy had robbed the country of two promising lives bound by a rare bond of brotherhood.

“This painful loss goes beyond the family. It is a loss to the nation,” he stated, noting that the emotional weight of losing two siblings at once was “almost beyond words.”

He added that although their lives were cut short, their legacy would endure in the hearts of many and in the national consciousness.

Mr Bagbin called for unity in grief and reaffirmed the State’s duty to protect the lives of citizens.

Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, paid tribute to the deceased, describing them as disciplined and purpose-driven individuals who embodied Ghanaian values.

“They inspired confidence and built meaningful relationships. Their lives reflected duty and commitment to national development,” he said.

The Government, he added, stood in solidarity with the bereaved family.

The two brothers were returning from Ho when their private aircraft crashed at Tema Community One, cutting short what many described as a life of promise and service.

They were members of the Alpha Aviators Association, founded by Dr Wiafe Akenteng, and had embarked on a mission to promote aviation awareness among young people.

As part of that initiative, they had planned to donate 4,000 aviation books to students in the Volta and Eastern Regions during the Easter period.

Members of the Association have since pledged to carry forward that vision.

“Though they are gone, their dream will continue to inspire future aviators,” the Association said.

Captain Amoanyi Donkor, who got married in December 2025, is survived by his wife and two children. His widow described him as courageous, compassionate, and deeply devoted to his family.

A sombre atmosphere marked the final rites as mourners filed past the flag-draped caskets in a moving farewell.

Among dignitaries present were Chief of Staff Mr Julius Debrah, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr Albert Dwumfour, Tema Mayor Ebi Bright, traditional authorities, and members of the Hebron Prayer Camp, founded by the deceased’s father, Elder Frank Donkor.

Gospel musicians including Elder Mireku, Jack Alolome, and Evangelist Diana provided moments of solace through music.
