Police Crack Down on Cybercrime, Violent Offences Across Ghana

Accra, March 31,  – The Ghana Police Service has announced the successful apprehension of multiple suspects involved in cybercrime, violent incidents, and organised criminal activities in operations conducted nationwide.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah‑Akrofi, Director-General of the Police Public Affairs Department, provided details at a press briefing in Accra, describing the arrests as intelligence-led and coordinated across regions.

Among the notable cases, two individuals were arrested for creating and disseminating AI-generated deepfake content impersonating former President John Dramani Mahama and Mrs Lordina Mahama. The material, circulated widely on Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, was intended to mislead and defraud members of the public.

Bernard Mensah, operating online under the alias “Charity Quaicoe,” was apprehended between Kasoa and Kokrobite for using the impersonation in financial scams. Another suspect, Michael Ebo Safo, was arrested in Anyan Abaasa, Central Region, for running a fraudulent account in the former President’s name.

DCOP Ansah‑Akrofi cautioned that producing or sharing deepfake content is a prosecutable offence under Ghanaian law.

In a separate incident, John Kwabena Owusu‑Ansah was arrested in Antoakrom, Ashanti Region, following a viral video in which he issued threats and made allegations against Justice Patricia Quansah, a High Court judge. The arrest came after a petition by the Judicial Service, and he remains in police custody.

The Police also apprehended Eric Kenny in connection with the murder of 56-year-old farmer Enoch Obiri at Obomofodensua, Suhum Municipality. Investigations indicate the victim was attacked on February 13, 2026, on his farm. Kenny, who allegedly threatened Obiri over a personal dispute, was arrested in Kwahu Sikamu after going into hiding.

In a significant breakthrough against organised crime, four suspects were arrested in connection with a spate of jewellery shop robberies in Accra and Takoradi that occurred between April and October 2025. Police identified Abdul Aziz Mamoud, also known as Justin Martin, an American national, as the alleged mastermind behind the operations.

Recovered items included jewellery, a hammer, motorbikes, a toy pistol, and burglary equipment. The suspects have confessed to their involvement, and police are pursuing an alleged receiver of the stolen property.

Inspector‑General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohonu, commended officers for their diligence and reiterated the Service’s commitment to combating crime in all its forms. The Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, online or in communities, to aid law enforcement.
