Deputy Minister Pushes Industry to Treat Wastewater, Protect Water Bodies

Accra, March 29, – The Deputy Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Madam Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, has urged industries to prioritise effective wastewater treatment to safeguard the environment and public health.

She said efficient effluent treatment systems were essential to ensuring that industrial discharge did not pollute water bodies or threaten communities.

Madam Tetteh-Agbotui made the call at the commissioning of an upgraded effluent treatment plant by Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, aimed at strengthening sustainable industrial practices.

The project, undertaken in collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy in Ghana and designed by Alumichem, forms part of broader efforts to promote responsible waste management in the country.

The event coincided with the global observance of World Water Day, reinforcing the need for sustainable water use.

The Deputy Minister stressed that companies demonstrating strong environmental responsibility must be encouraged, noting that treated wastewater could be repurposed to ease pressure on potable water supplies.

“With ongoing infrastructure and road projects nationwide, demand for water is rising, making alternative sources increasingly necessary,” she said.

She proposed partnerships between contractors and industries to use treated effluent for construction activities such as concrete works, particularly where treatment facilities are located near project sites.

Such collaboration, she noted, would conserve potable water for domestic and industrial use while improving overall resource efficiency.

Madam Tetteh-Agbotui described the facility as modern and effective, capable of treating industrial discharge before safe release into the environment.

She commended the Danish Embassy for supporting the initiative, saying it would encourage more industries to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Mr Jay Anjaria, Business Country Head of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, said the investment underscored the company’s commitment to world-class production standards and environmental sustainability.

He noted that the upgraded system would enable the company to save at least 8,000 litres of water daily, equivalent to about 16,000 sachet bags, for reuse in gardening and green belt development.

“Our products are proudly Ghanaian, born, made, and designed in Ghana for Africa and the world,” he said.

Mr Anjaria explained that the technology would help the company meet regulatory standards set by the Environmental Protection Authority, while ensuring safe wastewater discharge.

He added that sludge generated from the treatment process was converted into electricity at a biogas facility, contributing to renewable energy production and reducing waste.

He expressed hope that the initiative would inspire other industries to adopt innovative solutions to tackle wastewater management challenges and protect the environment.
