ECG Schedules Transformer Upgrades; Brief Outages Expected in Parts of Accra

Accra, March 29, – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will roll out a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in parts of Accra to improve power supply reliability and system capacity.

The exercise, approved by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure nationwide.

According to a statement signed by Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, Acting Director of Communications at ECG, the project will begin with the upgrade of 12 transformers across six primary substations.

The affected areas are Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.

The transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, significantly boosting load capacity and reducing pressure on the network in these rapidly growing communities.

The first phase of the exercise is scheduled to run from Wednesday, April 8, to Friday, April 10, 2026.

ECG indicated that the works would require brief planned power outages to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful execution of the project.

A detailed timetable outlining affected communities, outage periods, and duration will be released through the company’s official communication channels.

The Company assured customers that every effort would be made to minimise disruptions. Residents and businesses have been advised to take note of the schedule and make the necessary arrangements.

The statement described the upgrade as a critical step towards improving system resilience and delivering a more stable and efficient electricity supply.

ECG expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation during the exercise.
