Accra, April 9, – President John Dramani Mahama has extended congratulations to NASA astronaut Christina Koch following her selection for the historic Artemis II lunar mission, celebrating her connection to Ghana through her academic experience at the University of Ghana.
The President joined the University of Ghana community and the nation in acknowledging Koch’s achievement, describing it as a moment of pride for Ghana.
He noted that Koch, the only woman on the pioneering mission, previously studied at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year as an exchange student.
In a statement, President Mahama emphasised that her stay in Ghana went beyond academics, saying she deeply engaged with local culture and heritage during her time at Legon.
He highlighted that she studied courses including the History of Ghana, African History, Rural Sociology, Music, and Twi for Beginners, which he said contributed to shaping her global outlook.
According to him, Koch’s decision to display the Ghanaian flag in space reflects the lasting bond she formed with the country.
“Her time at Legon was not just a passing visit; she truly immersed herself in our culture and heritage,” the President said.
He added that her journey from lecture halls in Accra to space exploration serves as a powerful motivation for young Ghanaians.
President Mahama further noted that her achievement demonstrates the capacity of Ghana’s educational institutions to nurture individuals who go on to make global impact.
He stated that Koch’s story reinforces the message that determination and education can break boundaries and open extraordinary opportunities.
“It reminds us that our educational institutions continue to produce and shape global leaders who break barriers and reach for the stars,” he said.
On behalf of Ghana, the President wished Koch and the entire Artemis II crew a safe return to Earth, expressing optimism that her success would continue to inspire future generations.
“Congratulations, Christina. Ghana is proud of you!” he concluded.
