Kadjebi (O/R), April 8, – Residents of Kadjebi in the Oti Region have renewed calls for the installation of prepaid electricity meters, citing persistent concerns over estimated billing by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
They argue that the continued issuance of bills with unclear charges is affecting household incomes and placing pressure on small businesses in the area.
Mr Gershon Appiah, said his power was disconnected on January 28 over an alleged debt of GHS1,652. He explained that after making partial payments, he was later billed again despite having no electricity supply during the period.
He described the situation as unfair and called for urgent intervention by the Ministry of Energy to resolve what he termed “unjustifiable billing practices.”
Another resident, Ms Mawusi Asong, said prepaid meters would provide transparency and help prevent what she described as recurring financial losses to consumers.
She added that the current system of estimated billing had eroded public confidence in ECG’s services.
However, the Commercial Manager at the ECG Jasikan District Office, Mr Samuel Bonze Quaye, explained that customers with outstanding arrears must settle their debts before reconnection, adding that subsequent consumption is adjusted based on meter readings after restoration of supply.
Despite this explanation, residents maintained that prepaid meters remain the most effective solution to ensure accountability and restore trust between consumers and the utility provider.
