Accra, April 8, – The Netherlands has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most credible and realistic basis for resolving the long-standing Sahara dispute, while also reaffirming Rabat as a key strategic partner in regional and global stability.
The position was disclosed in Rabat following talks between Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Tom Berendsen and Morocco’s Foreign Minister Mr Nasser Bourita during an official working visit.
At a joint briefing, Mr Berendsen said the Dutch government now views genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the most viable path toward a political settlement of the dispute.
The stance was formalised in a joint communiqué, which also reaffirmed support for United Nations-led efforts, including UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and the mediation role of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Mr Staffan de Mistura.
According to the statement, the Netherlands will align its diplomatic and economic engagement with this position, in line with international law.
Mr Berendsen described Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, as a reliable partner and an active contributor to peace and stability at regional and international levels.
He also praised Morocco’s role in supporting the Palestinian cause and its cooperation in recent international forums on the two-State solution.
The Dutch minister further highlighted Morocco’s economic reforms, infrastructure development and investment opportunities, describing the country as an increasingly attractive destination for European investors.
He said Morocco also serves as a strategic gateway to West Africa, the Sahel and the Gulf region, reinforcing its geopolitical importance in regional development and security dynamics.
The declaration adds to growing European diplomatic support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal in the Sahara dispute.
