Accra, April 18, – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has entered into a five-year high-performance partnership with sports development firm X1 to enhance national team performance and strengthen grassroots football structures across the country.
The agreement is expected to support the Black Stars and other national teams while also extending investment into lower-tier competitions, including the Division One League Super Cup.
GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku described the partnership as a key milestone in the association’s long-term football development agenda, noting that recent progress at youth level signalled positive returns from ongoing structural reforms.
He pointed to the performance of Ghana’s U-15 girls’ team at a continental tournament in Zimbabwe as evidence that investment in foundational development was beginning to yield results.
According to him, the GFA’s focus on rebuilding the game from the grassroots was reflected in improved performances across several youth national teams, with multiple age categories either qualifying or close to qualification for major tournaments.
Under the deal, X1 will act as the official high-performance partner for the Black Stars, offering technical and developmental support aimed at improving competitiveness ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The partnership also covers youth and domestic competitions, with a focus on strengthening club structures, player development pathways and talent identification systems within Ghana football.
Head of X1 Global, Richard Zhang, said the collaboration was driven by Ghana’s deep football culture and the emotional connection fans have with the sport, describing football in the country as a strong expression of identity and national pride.
He said the initiative would extend beyond elite football to grassroots investment, including the construction and refurbishment of 10 playing pitches across the country, as well as the provision of equipment such as kits and boots for young players.
As part of the arrangement, Black Stars players Gideon Mensah and Elisha Owusu have been named brand ambassadors for the initiative.
Both the GFA and X1 expressed optimism that the partnership would contribute to long-term sustainability, improve competitiveness at international level, and create a stronger pipeline for emerging talent.
