Aworowa (Bono East), April 18, – Residents of Aworowa in the Techiman South Municipality have been left traumatised after a 42-year-old cocoa farmer allegedly attempted suicide by inflicting severe injuries on himself with a sharp object.
The victim, identified as Mr Kofi Assum, a cocoa farmer and basket weaver, was discovered in a pool of blood on Friday, April 17, 2026, at about 0600 hours, after neighbours responded to distress calls from his home.
He was first rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman before being referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi due to the seriousness of his condition.
Family members told the press that the incident was preceded by what they described as unusual behaviour, including complaints that he had been hearing voices allegedly instructing him to harm himself.
His mother, Madam Grace Adwoa Agyeiwaa, said her son had not previously shown signs of mental health challenges, making the incident all the more distressing for the family.
A close friend, Mr Collins Akumfi Ameyaw, also described the development as unexpected, adding that the victim had appeared normal in the days leading up to the incident.
Medical officials at the Holy Family Hospital confirmed that the farmer was in a critical condition upon admission before being transferred for specialised treatment at KATH.
The incident has triggered widespread concern in the community, with discussions increasingly focusing on mental health awareness and the need for early intervention and support systems.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
