Tamale, April 18, – The Northern Regional Sports Supporters Union (NORSSU) has called for the recall of former Black Stars captain André Ayew to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that his experience remains vital to Ghana’s tournament ambitions.
At a press briefing in Tamale, the group argued that Ayew’s leadership and international pedigree could strengthen squad balance and provide guidance for younger players heading into the global competition scheduled for June.
NORSSU Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Mohammed Baako Alhassan, said excluding the forward on the basis of age would be a misstep, stressing that elite tournaments often require a blend of youth and seasoned professionals.
He pointed to several global football figures still active at top level competitions, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Luka Modrić and Ahmed Musa, as examples of players whose experience continues to influence their national teams.
The group further argued that André Ayew’s potential participation would present a historic opportunity for him to become the first African footballer to feature in four FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Alhaji Alhassan also urged national team management to improve communication and handling of senior players, adding that squad decisions should prioritise performance, leadership and tactical value over sentiment or perceived decline.
Beyond the call for Ayew’s return, NORSSU appealed for greater recognition of retired national team players, proposing testimonial matches to honour their contributions while they are still alive.
The supporters’ group also raised concerns about regional fairness in supporter allocations for the World Cup, calling for equitable distribution of slots across all regions, particularly in northern Ghana.
They commended individuals and organisations contributing to Ghana’s World Cup preparations and encouraged continued national support as the Black Stars build towards the tournament.
