GFA to tighten travel security after death of Berekum Chelsea player

Accra, April 13, 2026—The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced plans to reinforce security protocols for clubs travelling for domestic competitions following the death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong in a suspected armed robbery attack.

Frimpong lost his life after the team bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea was ambushed by armed robbers while returning to Berekum from Samreboi, where they had played a Ghana Premier League Week 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996.

In a statement, the GFA said it would engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen existing travel security arrangements to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

“The GFA will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future,” the statement said.

The Association also called on the football fraternity to rally behind the club and the bereaved family in this period of mourning.

It noted that it remained in close contact with Berekum Chelsea and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations into the attack continue.

“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the statement added.

Several Ghana Premier League clubs have since expressed condolences to Berekum Chelsea.

Asante Kotoko, in a statement, said it stood in solidarity with the club following the incident and called for enhanced security measures to safeguard teams.

“Our thoughts are with the players, technical team and management during this difficult time. We urge the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of all clubs,” the club stated.
