Environmental Advocate Urges Government to Step Up Climate Action

Winneba (C/R), April 1, – Mr. Wilberforce Andrews, a member of the UN Global Impact, has called on the government to intensify efforts against climate change, highlighting persistent threats from air and water pollution, deforestation, and illegal sand mining.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Andrews said that human activities, including pollution of rivers, indiscriminate tree felling, fossil fuel burning, and unregulated sand winning, were accelerating environmental degradation in Ghana.

“Because of climate change, our rainfall patterns have changed; sometimes the main rainy season becomes a minor season, our weather fluctuates unpredictably, and floods can occur during the dry season without warning,” he warned.

He urged the government to implement a comprehensive and punitive environmental policy, backed by law, to deter offenders and protect the country’s natural resources.

Mr. Andrews also emphasized the importance of recycling plastics to both protect the environment and stimulate the economy, noting that citizens required further education to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

He appealed to the public to stop polluting rivers, burning forests, and engaging in unregulated sand mining, and instead focus on planting trees and cultivating food crops.

“As a people, it is time to change our attitudes towards the environment because climate change is a shared responsibility,” he stated.

The advocate further called on the government to support Ghanaian businesses and entrepreneurs to boost the economy and reduce the country’s reliance on imports.
