Vice President Engages EU High Representative on Security Partnership

Accra, March 24,  – Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang held discussions with Madam Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, during an official EU visit to Ghana.

The engagement underscored efforts to deepen Ghana–EU cooperation, particularly in peace and security, and culminated in the signing of the Ghana–EU Security and Defense Partnership, making Ghana the first African country to join this strategic initiative alongside nations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the EU’s ongoing support through initiatives like the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defense Initiative, which have supported over 30 projects covering conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.

The visit also featured the handover of security equipment, including drones, motorcycles, counter-UAV systems, and EOD vehicles, to strengthen the operational capacity of Ghana’s security forces.

Amid growing regional security challenges, including attacks on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, the Vice President stressed that strategic partnerships are vital for safeguarding peace and stability, which are essential foundations for national development.
