Two Ghanaian peacekeepers wounded in missile strike in Lebanon

Accra, March 7, – Two members of the Ghana Armed Forces serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were critically injured when their battalion position came under missile fire in southern Lebanon amid the ongoing conflict involving Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.

A release from the GAF, signed by Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director of Public Relations, indicated that the attack occurred between 5:45 p.m. and 5:52 p.m. local time on Friday. A third soldier sustained psychological trauma during the incident.

The Officers’ Mess at the battalion site was completely destroyed by the strikes. The statement added that the injured personnel are receiving emergency care at the Level One Medical Bunker and are expected to be transferred to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further treatment.

GAF reassured the public that other troops deployed in the area were unharmed, having taken shelter in fortified underground bunkers as precautionary measures amid the tense security situation.

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has lodged a formal complaint with the United Nations in New York and called on all parties operating in the UNIFIL zone to uphold the safety of peacekeeping personnel.
