Accra, March 23, – The Northern Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged assault on visual artist Ibrahim Mahama by unidentified security officers in Tamale.
In a statement, Chief Inspector Luckman Niedow Alhassan, Northern Regional Public Affairs Officer, clarified that the Special Operations Team (Black Maria) was not involved, having been withdrawn from the region on March 5, 2026, weeks before the incident.
According to the release, the cause of the assault remains unknown, but Mr. Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), Red Clay Studio, and Nkrumah Voli-ni, reported that armed officers forced their way into his vehicle, compelling him to unlock his phone, after which images were allegedly deleted.
The Police assured the public that updates on the investigation would be communicated as they become available.
