Accra, Feb. 27 – Ghana’s Parliament witnessed a mix of protest, pageantry and political theatre on Friday as President John Dramani Mahama delivered the 2026 State of the Nation Address in line with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
The sitting was marked by contrasting displays from both sides of the House. Members of the Minority caucus appeared in black attire, wearing sashes bearing the inscription “Ya yɛ mobo dodo” (translated as “we are too pitiful”).
In a coordinated protest, they stood up holding cocoa pods and sang, expressing concern over declining global cocoa prices, which they argued were negatively affecting Ghanaian farmers and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the Majority caucus, dressed in white, responded with loud applause and chants of approval throughout the President’s address, praising his leadership as he outlined government achievements and policy priorities.
During his speech, President Mahama struck an optimistic tone, declaring that “Ghana is back” and emphasising resilience, renewal and national progress despite prevailing challenges.
A lighter moment occurred when he made a playful remark involving Alexander Afenyo-Markin, drawing laughter from both sides of the chamber and briefly easing tensions.
President Mahama eased tensions during a cocoa pricing debate by playfully nodding to regional ties after referencing ex-Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul.
“I and Nitiwul are from the North; you, Afenyo, you are from Winneba,” he quipped to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, sparking laughter across the chamber.
The light moment cut through heavy policy talk, showcasing Mahama's knack for connecting personally amid economic discussions.
The session, however, ended on a divided note, with the Minority voicing disapproval while the Majority countered with cheers and chants.
Despite the sharp exchanges, the atmosphere softened after proceedings, as President Mahama and Mr Afenyo-Markin were seen engaging cordially, reflecting a level of mutual respect beyond partisan disagreements.
The address itself covered key areas such as healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure development and anti-corruption efforts, with the President reaffirming his administration’s focus on accountability and national growth.
