Mahama Announces Major Security Sector Retooling and Infrastructure Expansion

Accra, Feb. 27 – President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed government’s commitment to reinforcing Ghana’s security system, outlining a broad programme focused on retooling and infrastructure development for the country’s security agencies.

Delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) before Parliament, the President stated that reforms within the security sector, enhanced logistics and improved personnel welfare remained central to safeguarding national stability and territorial integrity.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, he emphasised that ongoing investments were aimed at boosting operational readiness, particularly in response to evolving regional threats such as violent extremism in the Sahel.

The government, he noted, had stepped up logistical support to the military through the acquisition and rehabilitation of key equipment to strengthen land, air and maritime operations. Infrastructure projects within barracks and training institutions are also advancing, with attention on accommodation, healthcare and overall welfare of personnel.

Strengthening border security remains a major priority, with increased deployments and surveillance systems along Ghana’s northern borders to curb infiltration and transnational criminal activities.

On internal security, the President highlighted a retooling initiative for the Ghana Police Service, which includes the provision of additional vehicles, improved communication systems and protective gear to enhance operational efficiency.

He said these measures were expected to improve police visibility and response times, thereby strengthening public trust in law enforcement.

The President also underscored ongoing training and capacity-building programmes designed to professionalise the security services and align their operations with democratic governance and human rights principles.

He added that government was intensifying coordination among key institutions, including the Police, Armed Forces, Immigration Service, Customs Division and intelligence agencies, to effectively address organised crime, cyber threats and cross-border insecurity.

President Mahama stressed that national security remained a cornerstone of economic recovery and development, noting that a stable environment was essential for investment, employment creation and sustainable growth.

He assured Parliament of continued strategic resource allocation to ensure that Ghana’s security agencies remained adequately equipped, disciplined and responsive to emerging challenges.
