Lands Minister Launches Tree for Life Initiative to Strengthen Green Economy

Accra, March 20, – Ghana has officially launched the second edition of the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative, reinforcing its commitment to a green economy, coinciding with the 2026 International Day of Forests at the Achimota Forest Reserve.

Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, emphasized that forests are now pivotal to Ghana’s economic growth.

“Forests are no longer only ecological treasures; they are engines of prosperity. The theme, Forests and Economies, embodies President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to transform Ghana’s relationship with nature. A thriving tree is not just an environmental asset—it is a financial one,” he said, highlighting opportunities in carbon credits, sustainable timber, ecotourism, and pharmaceuticals.

Mr Buah noted that over 30 million seedlings were planted in 2025, creating more than 41,000 jobs, and Ghana aims to plant another 30 million seedlings in 2026.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, highlighted the ecological significance of the Achimota Forest Reserve, promising collaboration with Parks and Gardens and the Ministry of Transport to maintain trees along roads.

Dr Hugh C. A. Brown, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, reported that the 2025 initiative restored 23,600 hectares of degraded landscapes and planted over 30.8 million seedlings nationwide, while warning that illegal mining, logging, and agricultural expansion remain major threats.

He also stressed the need for better protection of forestry officers, including tactical training, protective gear, and forest protection camps.

Solidarity messages from Priya Gujadhur, FAO Country Director, and a representative of the Ga Mantse reaffirmed commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.

The launch attracted government officials, MPs, traditional and religious leaders, civil society actors, students, and media representatives, demonstrating broad-based support for Ghana’s green agenda.
