Tema, March 20, – Dr Ann Boateng, Head of the Dental Department at Tema General Hospital, has raised alarm over the growing use of unregulated “fashion braces,” warning that the trend poses serious oral health risks, particularly among young people.
Dr Boateng explained that braces applied by unqualified individuals can cause tooth misalignment, gum infections, and long-term jaw damage. She highlighted that some patients have even lost teeth due to improper application of these cosmetic devices.
Speaking during the World Oral Health Day celebration under the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” Dr Boateng stressed the importance of seeking professional care. She noted that many unauthorised practitioners operate without medical training and fail to follow proper safety protocols, such as glove use and sterilization of instruments, increasing the risk of infection.
“Orthodontic treatment is a specialised field requiring proper knowledge and experience. The youth must avoid being tempted by low-cost, trendy services that could harm their long-term oral health,” she cautioned.
The dentist urged the public to prioritise safe, regulated orthodontic care and avoid shortcuts that compromise dental health for temporary aesthetic appeal.
