Ketan (WR), March 26, – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed persistent power outages in the Western Region to the activities of unauthorised electricians and vegetation interference along power lines.
Mr Emmanuel J. Ofori, Western Regional General Manager of ECG, said illegal connections and unapproved load transfers by uncertified electricians continued to disrupt power supply in many communities.
He explained that such operators often shift electricity loads between lines at the request of consumers without informing the Company, leading to overloads and system instability.
“These unauthorised persons tamper with transformers and undertake illegal connections, creating serious operational challenges,” he said during a media tour of the Bulk Supply Point at Ketan in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
Mr Ofori urged residents to rely on ECG for all electrical services and avoid engaging unqualified individuals.
“You need the patience as a consumer after calling us, rather than resort to uncertified electricians who create problems for both the Company and customers,” he said.
He noted that outages were costly to ECG and stressed that the Company had no incentive to disrupt supply unnecessarily.
Mr Ofori also identified vegetation interference as a major cause of outages, particularly during the rainy season.
He explained that many power lines passed through dense vegetation and difficult terrain, where overgrown trees and bamboo could come into contact with lines during storms, triggering faults and system shutdowns as a safety measure.
He said ECG undertook annual vegetation control exercises, engaging contractors to clear growth along transmission corridors to minimise such incidents.
Mr Ofori further highlighted overloading at the Bogoso Bulk Supply Point, which serves communities such as Bogoso, Asankragua and surrounding areas.
He said the situation had affected supply in parts of Amenfi East and Amenfi West.
To address the challenge, ECG is constructing a new transmission line from the Prestea Bulk Supply Point to the Bogoso facility to redistribute load and improve reliability.
Mr Ofori assured customers of the Company’s commitment to resolving the issues and improving power supply in the region.
