Electronic Road Tolls Set for Q4 2026 Rollout, Parliamentary Committee Announces

Accra, March 26,  – The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament has announced that Ghana’s electronic road toll system will be implemented by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairperson of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Wassa East, disclosed this to the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra.

He said ongoing feasibility studies and preparatory processes were nearing completion to enable the rollout.

The announcement follows concerns raised earlier by the Minority Caucus over delays in implementing the policy.

Mr Adjei Mensah, however, maintained that the Minority had no moral justification to criticise the process, citing the previous administration’s decision to abolish road tolls.

He noted that prior to their removal, road tolls generated about GH¢60 million monthly for the state, and their abolition resulted in significant revenue losses.

The Committee also addressed concerns regarding road contract awards under the “Big Push” infrastructure initiative.

It clarified that 44 per cent of the approximately 400 contracts were awarded through sole sourcing, while the remaining were procured through competitive bidding processes.

Other issues discussed included progress on the Boankra Inland Port project, the Mpakadan Railway System, plans to restructure the Road Fund into a Road Maintenance Trust Fund, and part payment of GH¢107 billion in road arrears.

The Committee emphasised that the electronic toll system would restore a sustainable source of revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure development, while enhancing transparency and efficiency in revenue collection.
