Accra, March 13, – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno hosted a delegation of senior officials from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to discuss cooperation and the adoption of modern policing techniques.
According to a press release shared with the Ghana News Agency, the NYPD team was received at Police Headquarters by the IGP and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB).
Key topics of discussion included operational collaboration, professional knowledge exchange, and the use of technology in policing, such as data analytics, digital investigative tools, and integrated intelligence platforms.
The dialogue also addressed officer safety, welfare, training, equipment needs, and institutional support systems, alongside discussions on police accountability in a democratic context. The NYPD shared insights on transparency, internal oversight, and building community trust, while the Ghana Police Service (GPS) highlighted ongoing reforms and accountability measures.
The statement noted that a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GPS and NYPD was reviewed, emphasizing sustained collaboration, training exchanges, information sharing, and joint action against transnational crime.
Beyond board-level meetings, the NYPD delegation engaged operational units, including the Criminal Investigation Department, INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate, focusing on investigative cooperation, intelligence coordination, and transnational crime challenges.
The delegation toured the Joint Operations Center (JOC) at Police Headquarters and received briefings on Ghana’s integrated command and control system for nationwide policing, incident response, and intelligence monitoring.
Officer exchange programs were also discussed, including the deployment of a senior NYPD detective at GPS Headquarters and the placement of a senior Ghana Police officer within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau to enhance collaboration.
Additionally, the NYPD delegation held courtesy meetings with the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, to strengthen national security coordination and intelligence sharing.
The visitors also met the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Rolf Olson, to explore further avenues for bilateral law enforcement cooperation.
