Ellembelle Water Guards Mount Barricades Against Galamsey

Aiyinasi (W/R), March 24, – The Ellembelle District Command of the Blue Water Guards has mounted barricades at illegal mining (galamsey) hotspots to prevent machinery from accessing river bodies and forest reserves.

The move is part of a broader government crackdown led by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, aimed at decisively curbing illegal mining activities across the country.

Mr Stephen Afena, Ellembelle District Coordinator of the Blue Water Guards, said the barricades targeted key routes known for galamsey operations, including:

Nkroful to Teleku-Bokazo through Anwia
Aiyinasi to Nyamebekyere and Aiyinasi North
Ewereko to Mantukwa extending to the Prestea border
Awiebo to Asasetre
Salma to Akango and Aluku
Nyamebekyere to Sendu

He explained that restricting access to equipment such as excavators and “chanfang” machines would significantly disrupt illegal mining operations.

Mr Afena noted that while some routes were not yet fully secured due to logistical constraints, the strategy of tracking and blocking machinery from entering forests and riverine areas would serve as a strong deterrent.

He added that the Command had intensified operations to restore polluted water bodies and warned officers to remain professional and resist any attempts by illegal miners to influence them through bribery.

The initiative forms part of a wider anti-galamsey framework, which includes programmes such as the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), the Tree for Life initiative, the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP), and the Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG).

Authorities believe these coordinated interventions will help make illegal mining less attractive while promoting sustainable resource management.
