Apprentice Struck Dead by Lightning at Kadjebi

Kadjebi (O/R), March 23, – A 25-year-old mason apprentice, Joseph Aborbor, has been killed by a lightning strike during a rainstorm at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 21, at Kassadjan, a suburb of Kadjebi, when a heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorms hit the area.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased was in his room making a phone call when lightning struck, killing him instantly. Residents were left shocked by the sudden incident. The body has since been deposited at the Jasikan Municipal Hospital for preservation and further investigations.

Some residents suggested the death might be linked to a missing motorbike, with claims that the motorbike owner had consulted Zakadza, a traditional spiritual belief system in parts of the Volta and Oti Regions, Togo and Benin, which is believed to punish wrongdoing through thunder and lightning when invoked.

The incident has reignited discussions in rural communities about the intersection of traditional beliefs and natural phenomena, particularly in cases involving sudden deaths during thunderstorms.
