Sekondi (W/R), Feb. 23, – The Ghana Police Service in the Western Region has intercepted two trucks carrying large quantities of substances suspected to be cannabis and arrested three persons in connection with the operation, including two who allegedly attempted to bribe officers.
The Kia trucks, bearing registration numbers GE 8965-12 and GS 3368-17, were stopped at the Assorku Barrier in the Shama Municipality and at Nkroful Junction in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis respectively on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Public Relations Officer at the Western Regional Police Headquarters, said the first vehicle was intercepted on the Accra-Takoradi highway. It was loaded with sacks of suspected cannabis concealed under sawdust. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while three others fled.
Further intelligence gathered from the initial arrest led to the interception of a second truck at Nkroful Junction, which was also found transporting similar substances.
In total, officers retrieved 152 bales from the two vehicles. Each bale reportedly contained about 80 parcels of substances believed to be Indian hemp.
According to Supt Adiku, two men — Kwabena Forson, 55, and Isaac Kwame Kontor, 44 — were subsequently arrested after allegedly offering GH¢69,000 to secure the release of an earlier suspect, Moses Kweku Tawiah, 44, who had been apprehended at the Assorku Barrier.
She said the officers rejected the offer and immediately placed the two men under arrest.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be arraigned before court once inquiries are concluded.
Supt Adiku cautioned individuals engaged in drug trafficking that security agencies remain vigilant across the region’s road corridors. She commended the officers involved for their alertness, noting that the seizure prevented the consignment from potentially crossing Ghana’s borders.
