Accra, Feb. 23, – The Adabraka District Court has remanded a 45-year-old businessman into police custody over alleged unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
The accused, Alhassan Illiyasu, popularly known as “Arab Man,” faces three counts of possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority.
Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, leading the prosecution, prayed the court to preserve the plea of the accused pending further investigations. The court obliged and did not take his plea. He is expected to reappear on March 9, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Illiyasu was allegedly found in possession of two foreign-made pump action guns, an AK47 rifle, 239 BB cartridges and 43 rounds of AK47 live ammunition.
Other items retrieved from his residence included four bulletproof vests, a black face mask, two cutlasses, two Samsung mobile phones, an iPhone, a wristwatch and a CCTV monitor.
The court heard that the accused resided at Roman Down in Ashiaman. On January 7, 2026, the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police received intelligence that he was being sought in connection with a robbery incident at Adabraka Gold Shop and had been sighted in the Ashiaman area.
The information further indicated that he had returned from a construction site carrying a sack suspected to contain weapons.
A police team, with support from the Ashaiman District Police Command, moved to the location and effected his arrest. A subsequent search of his room allegedly uncovered the weapons and other items concealed in a bag.
During investigations, the accused reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the firearms and ammunition. He is, however, said to have claimed that although the items were in his possession, they were not used for any unlawful purpose.
