Accra, Feb. 17, – The Government of Ghana has summoned the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, following the alleged publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women by an individual believed to be a Russian national.
The summons was issued at the directive of the Minister for Foreign Affairs to formally register Ghana’s strong objection to the incident and to request cooperation from Russian authorities in ensuring accountability.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the act as deeply offensive, unlawful and a grave infringement on the privacy and dignity of the affected individuals. The Ministry emphasised that the conduct contravened Ghanaian laws and raised serious cybercrime concerns.
During discussions with officials of the Ministry, Ambassador Berdnikov acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and recognised their potential cybercrime dimensions. He assured the Government of Ghana of Russia’s readiness to collaborate in ongoing investigations.
However, the Ambassador indicated that he was unable to immediately confirm the Russian nationality of the suspect. He further stated that the name circulating in sections of the media did not correspond to any known Russian name and appeared instead to be a vulgar or inappropriate expression in the Russian language.
According to him, reports of similar online activities attributed to the same individual had surfaced in other countries and were currently under review by Russian authorities and cybercrime specialists.
Ambassador Berdnikov pledged that the Russian Embassy in Accra would provide relevant information to assist Ghanaian authorities in their efforts to track down and prosecute the suspect. He made this assurance despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between Ghana and Russia.
The Ministry reaffirmed its determination to pursue justice through diplomatic engagement and available international legal mechanisms, while relying on the longstanding cordial relations between Ghana and Russia.
