GAF airlifts injured Ghanaian traders from Burkina Faso attack

Accra, Feb 18, – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) successfully evacuated three Ghanaian tomato traders injured during the February 14 terrorist attack in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, airlifting them to 37 Military Hospital in Accra for treatment.

Naval Captain Veronica Arhin, Acting Director of GAF Public Relations, confirmed the Ghana Air Force operation was executed on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, as part of government's coordinated humanitarian response to the attack that claimed seven Ghanaian lives.

The statement expressed deepest condolences to bereaved families and prayed for the souls of the departed traders, who were ambushed while returning from cross-border tomato purchases.

President John Dramani Mahama had directed the evacuation during the Ghana Tree Crops Investment Summit, highlighting growing Sahel security risks threatening longstanding Ghana-Burkina trade.

The injured traders—one previously reported critical, two stable—are undergoing medical assessment at 37 Military Hospital following airlift from Burkina Faso.

Ghana's mission in Ouagadougou coordinated with Burkina authorities, who buried the decomposed remains locally on February 16 after identification via surviving women traders and Ghana Cards.
