Bosomase (WR), Jan 25, - The
Western Regional Office of the Ghana Water Company has commenced a four-day dredging exercise at
the Bosomase raw water intake point to
open up the silted facility due to incessant illegal mining along the Pra
River.
The mountain heap of clay and
sand had blocked the easy flow of water from the raw water intake point and
thereby slowing down water supply within the Second/Takoradi Metropolis.
Mr Teiko Cudjoe, Regional Manager
of the Company and Mr Evans Akot-Adzei Regional Water Quality Manager took
journalists around the facility to inspect work done so far.
The Regional Manager said the
four day dredging is estimated to cost from GH₵ 50,000.00 to GH₵60,000.00
Ghana to completely evacuate the heaps and ensure free flow.
He said currently, the company
was able to produce only 3 million gallons daily and was hopeful that at least
the exercise would increase production to about five million.
He said the exercise had become
necessary due to the fact that the volumes of abstraction had gone down
necessitating water rationing adding, "We have not reached the crisis
stage yet and this and other interventions are being carried out to save the
situation".
Mr Evans Akot -Adzei, Regional
Water quality Manager who gave a comparative analysis of the quality of water
stated that, though last year January recorded over 1800 turbidity levels, the
situation had improved dramatically to 450 this January.
He was hopeful that controlled
illegal or small scale mining activities could help turn the water situation
around in the region.
