Accra, Jan. 25, – The Local
Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2018 Women’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON)
on Wednesday, appealed for support towards the renovation and refurbishment of
the various stadia and training pitches selected for the women football
tournament.
A delegation from the
Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected in the country for
inspection in May ahead of the AFCON 2018 scheduled for November 7 to December
1.
Mrs. Freda Prempeh, the
Chairperson of the Committee, made the appeal in an interview with the GNA
Sports, after the LOC paid a courtesy call on Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, at her
office in Accra to seek the first lady’s support for the upcoming event.
She said the training pitches
especially the Achimota School Changing Room needed urgent rehabilitation work
to meet international standard and entreated corporate bodies, non-governmental
organizations and well-to-do individuals to support.
Mrs. Prempeh, who is the Member
of Parliament (MP) for Tano North constituency in the Brong-Ahafo Region was
quick to add that though the Ministry of Youth the Sports has assured the LOC
to work on the facilities, more support is required from other partners.
On behalf of the committee, Mrs.
Prempeh commended the first lady for her charity work, particularly her swift
intervention to save the mother-baby unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching
Hospital.
Mrs Akufo-Addo expressed her
appreciation to the LOC for their commitment, and pledged her unflinching
support to the committee to enable the country to host the women’s football
tournament successfully.
She pledged her support towards
renovation of the Achimota training pitch and rallied the support of other
charitable and corporate bodies as well.
