73rd anniversary of the victory of Myohaung battle observed

Apremdo (WR), Jan. 24, -The 73rd remembrance service of the battle of Myohaung which saw the West African team winning the battle against the Japanese has been observed in Takoradi.

The annual drum-head service offered current servicemen an opportunity to relate to the selfless contribution of their predecessors to the Unit and the need to uphold the one unit, one mission slogan in advancing the course of the unit.

Reverend Thomas Canon Annan Forson together with Captain Mohammed Alhassan officiated the two hour service in memory of the battle of Myohaung whereas Major General Clayton Naa Boanubah Yaache read the sermon from 1 Corinthians 4:8-18 to highlight the need for dedicated service to human kind.

 

In the parade was Mascot Charles the fifth which represents the spirit and soul of the unit, 128 men drawn from all the forces and 38 veterans.

 

Ex Chief Petty Officer 1 Augustine Osei Bonsu, Regional Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana said the battle of Myohaung had been chosen as an annual remembrance day for the whole royal West African frontier which emerged victorious on the battle field at Myohaung.

He said, Myohaung, the ancient capital of Arakanes kings lies in the valley of  the River Kaladan, down which the team having cleared the parallel valley, crossed the intervening hills by forced marches and fell upon the flanks and rear of the enemy (Japanese) as  the main attack was developing.

The singular results according to him, was the success the West African Forces including Nigeria, Gold coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia won in that battle in 1945 despite some casualties.
