Accra, April 24, – Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz says player selection for the national team will be based strictly on merit as he prepares to assemble his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced tactician, who has been handed a four-month contract, made the remarks after his official unveiling in Accra, stressing that the Black Stars belong to no individual or group.
“First of all, nobody owns the national team. That’s the point that must be clear. But the players dream to represent the country. It is our job to give them a fair and right position,” he said.
Queiroz explained that his early preparations have focused on assessing locally based players, noting that he had requested the Ghana Football Association to organise dedicated sessions for proper evaluation.
“In this short period of time, I started with the federation to organise local players because I didn’t want to go to the finals of the national team without having the opportunity to see them, to deal with them and analyse them,” he stated.
He added that his selection approach would prioritise players who demonstrate the right mentality and commitment in addition to technical ability.
“Of course, we know that the international footballers, a lot of them. And it is also my responsibility to make sure that the players that I select are the people with the right spirit,” he said.
Queiroz is expected to submit his final squad list to FIFA ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with a June 1 deadline.
