Accra, April 23, – Parliament will expedite consideration of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill and forward it to the President for assent, Mr Samuel N. George, the principal sponsor, has said.
Mr George dismissed suggestions that the Bill had stalled following his appointment as a minister, insisting that the legislative process was ongoing.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement organised by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee in Accra, he said the House had begun clause-by-clause scrutiny of the Bill after its referral by the Speaker.
He clarified that the legislation was still before Parliament and not yet at the Presidency for assent.
Mr George acknowledged concerns raised by religious bodies over delays, describing them as understandable given the significance of the proposed law.
The Bill, which seeks to criminalise same-sex relations and related advocacy, continues to generate strong support from religious organisations, while civil society groups and human rights advocates have criticised aspects of it.
He rejected claims that the sponsors had abandoned the process, stating that the Bill remained active and was progressing through the required parliamentary stages.
Mr George expressed confidence that Parliament would conclude work on the legislation within a reasonable time and submit it for presidential consideration.
The Bill was previously passed by Parliament but expired after it did not receive presidential assent before the end of the Eighth Parliament.
