Tamale, April 23, – A special anti-narcotics operation by the Northern Regional Police Command has led to the arrest of 12 persons in Tamale and the Tolon District.
The exercise, undertaken by the Special Operations Team known as “Red Maria,” also resulted in the retrieval of quantities of substances suspected to be tramadol and Indian hemp.
A statement from the Police Public Relations Unit said the operation was carried out on Wednesday morning as part of efforts to clamp down on illicit drug activities in the region.
The team initially conducted targeted swoops within the Tamale Metropolis before extending the operation to Tolon based on intelligence.
Those arrested have been identified as Mohammed Shabu, 19; Abdul Rahman Rashid, 20; Zakaria Sulemana, 20; Alhassan Ibrahim, 20; Abdulai Manine, 20; Abdullai Jalil, 21; Abdul Rahman Hamidu, 24; and Latif Hamadu, 48.
The others are Ibrahim Idrisu, 35; Adam Fatawu, 17; Abubakari Nayo, 24; and Iddrisu Mohammed, 34.
Police said the suspects were picked up for alleged possession and dealing in narcotic substances without authorisation.
All 12 suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Police reiterated their resolve to sustain operations aimed at reducing drug trafficking and related crimes in the region.
