MP rallies Ashtown residents to reclaim community image

Kumasi, April 23,  – The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on residents of Ashanti New Town (Ashtown) to work collectively to restore the area’s reputation and social standing.

He said the community, once noted for discipline, enterprise and its contribution to national development, was increasingly being associated with negative social trends.

Addressing a gathering of youth at the launch of the 102nd anniversary celebration and legendary awards of Ashtown, organised by the Proud Ashanti Movement, the MP said such perceptions must be reversed through unity and purposeful action.

He urged the youth to engage in positive activities, including joining associations, educational groups and sports initiatives, to promote development and social cohesion.

Nana Awuah expressed concern over rising reports linking the area to drug abuse, robbery, teenage pregnancy and other social challenges, warning that such issues could undermine the future of the younger generation and stall community progress.

He called for sustained public education and preventive measures, including collaboration with religious leaders to intensify advocacy against social vices.

The MP also stressed the importance of mentorship, skills training and education in equipping young people to pursue meaningful livelihoods.

Nana Akwasi Amoah, Chairman for the occasion, appealed to parents and community leaders to take greater responsibility in guiding the youth and promoting discipline.

He encouraged the organisation of community-based activities such as clean-up exercises, mentorship engagements and structured weekend programmes to positively channel the energies of young people.
