Methodist Bishop backs calls for urgent passage of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Accra, April 24, – The Methodist Church has renewed calls for the swift passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, arguing that it is necessary to safeguard Ghana’s moral and cultural values.

The appeal was made against the backdrop of renewed national debate over the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, which was passed by Parliament in 2024 but is still awaiting presidential assent.

The Rt. Rev. Andrew Mbeah-Baiden, Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church of Ghana, made the remarks at the opening of the 8th Annual Synod of the Diocese in Accra.

He said various religious groups had already spoken in support of the legislation and urged state authorities to complete the process without delay.

“…I also add my voice to it, urging the Parliament and His Excellency the President to expedite action on it,” he said.

The Bill seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ practices and related advocacy while promoting provisions anchored on Ghanaian family values.

President John Dramani Mahama has previously stated that the matter must go through constitutional and legal procedures before any final determination is made.

The debate continues to divide opinion, with faith-based organisations largely in support and human rights advocates raising concerns about its implications.

The Bishop also cautioned against proposals affecting mission schools, warning that changes to their governance structure could weaken discipline and their religious foundation.

He further expressed concern over what he described as misuse of biblical references by a group allegedly promoting lottery predictions, urging regulatory intervention.

He outlined ongoing programmes under the Diocese, including prayer initiatives and infrastructure projects funded through a dedicated Mission Development Fund, which has raised over GH¢767,000.

He encouraged unity among members and adherence to Methodist principles to strengthen the Church’s mission.

The Synod was on the theme: “Walking in the Word: Equipped for Every Good Work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).”
