Fire outbreak at Akosombo Substation disrupts power supply in parts of Ghana

Tema, April 23, – A fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has disrupted electricity transmission, leading to power interruptions in parts of the country.

The incident occurred at about 14:01 hours on Wednesday, April 22, affecting operations at the facility and resulting in outages in some areas supplied through the national grid.

In a statement issued by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the company said emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site to assess the situation and begin remedial measures.

It said a detailed technical assessment was underway to determine the extent of damage and guide restoration efforts aimed at resuming normal power supply.

GRIDCo assured the public that its engineers were working to stabilise the transmission system and reduce the impact of the disruption on consumers.

The statement added that updates would be communicated as further information becomes available.

The company urged the public to remain calm, stressing that efforts were ongoing to restore full operations as quickly as possible.

GRIDCo is responsible for transmitting electricity from generation plants to distribution utilities across Ghana and parts of the West African sub-region.
