Berekum (Bono), April 23, – Residents of Berekum on Thursday took to the streets in protest against illegal mining activities at Amomaso in the municipality.
The demonstrators, including traditional authorities, dressed in red and black attire and carried placards with messages such as “We hate galamsey,” “Mercury is poisonous,” and “No galamsey in Berekum.”
They marched through principal streets of the town to express concern over the environmental damage caused by the activities and to call for urgent action to protect land and water bodies.
Osabarima Kwabena Owusu, Chief of Kato and a convener of the protest, criticised what he described as support for illegal mining by some local leaders.
He said it was unacceptable for the environment to be degraded through the destruction of vegetation and pollution of water sources.
“We cannot sit unconcerned while our lands are destroyed. The future of the next generation depends on what we do today,” he said.
The protesters later presented a petition to Elder Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, Member of Parliament for Berekum East, for onward submission to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Elder Kyeremeh assured them of government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining and warned that offenders would face the law.
Osabarima Asomah Sabi, Chief of Senaase, also cautioned residents who supported illegal mining to desist from such activities to avoid sanctions.
Prior to the march, Nana Osei Mensah, Chief of Nanasuano, performed traditional rites, invoking divine intervention to help address the situation.
