Accra, April 15, – Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by the Tema Regional Police Command following a robbery attack on a mobile money (MoMo) vendor at Tema Community Five.
The suspects, who are yet to be identified, were killed during a shootout with a police patrol team that responded swiftly to the incident on Monday at about 0830 hours.
A press release issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, Head of the Command’s Public Affairs Unit, said preliminary investigations indicated that the victim operated a MoMo shop at Aba Fosuah Plaza in Community Five.
It said one of the suspects, who arrived on a motorbike as a pillion passenger, approached the vendor under the guise of a cash-out transaction.
“As the victim retrieved her phone to process the request, the suspect pulled out a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash,” the statement said.
The victim reportedly resisted, resulting in a struggle during which the second suspect, who was riding the motorbike, joined in the attack.
During the confrontation, the pillion rider shot the victim in the leg. The victim subsequently released the bag, and the suspects fled the scene on the motorbike.
Police said a patrol team in the vicinity responded to a distress call and pursued the suspects.
At a junction near Smart Hotel at Community Six, the suspects reportedly opened fire on the police, who returned fire, fatally wounding both men.
The suspects were taken to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Items retrieved from the suspects include a 9mm pistol with ammunition, three Android phones, a Ghana Card, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key and GH¢11,390 in cash.
Police also recovered a spent cartridge from the scene. Further checks revealed that the Ghana Card found on the suspects belonged to the victim.
The victim is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
The Tema Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to public safety and urged citizens to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
