Akpafu (O/R), April 15, – Some cocoa farmers in the Guan District of the Oti Region have appealed to government to urgently settle outstanding payments for cocoa purchases, saying the delay has become increasingly unbearable and is affecting livelihoods.
They said the prolonged delay in payment was making it difficult to support families and hire labour for cocoa farm operations, with many farmers struggling to sustain production.
Mr Emmanuel Acquah, Chief Farmer at Akpafu Odomi, said although farmers had been informed that funds had been disbursed, they were yet to receive any payments.
He described the situation as worrying and called for immediate intervention to restore confidence in the cocoa purchasing system.
Mr Gideon Nyarko, Regional Secretary of the Association of Produce Buying Company (PBC) Marketing Clerks for the Volta and Oti Regions, said the situation was also affecting cocoa buyers in the area.
He said some buyers had been forced to stay away from their homes due to rising tensions and threats from aggrieved farmers over delayed payments.
Mr Nyarko urged government to expedite the release of outstanding funds to prevent further escalation of tensions within cocoa-growing communities.
