TRADERS IN ELLEMBELLE SNUB PESSEWA COINS DESPITE LEGAL TENDER STATUS

Nkroful (W/R), April 20, – Some traders and vendors in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region have begun rejecting 10 and 20 pesewa coins in everyday commercial transactions, despite their status as legal tender.

Although there has been no official directive from the Bank of Ghana to withdraw the coins, several sellers say they no longer accept them, citing inconvenience and perceived lack of usefulness in trade.

Investigation found that some traders refuse the coins on the grounds that they are “difficult to keep,” while others argue that they no longer carry meaningful value in transactions.

However, a source at the Bank of Ghana, speaking anonymously, clarified that no currency denomination has been withdrawn and all coins remain valid for transactions.

The source said the Central Bank has received growing complaints about the rejection of small denominations, particularly 10 and 20 pesewa coins, and is intensifying public education on their continued use.

It stressed that the rejection of any legal tender currency is an offence punishable by law.

The Bank of Ghana has therefore begun sensitisation efforts to remind the public that the coins remain in circulation and must be accepted in all transactions.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has urged the public to report individuals who refuse any legal tender to the nearest police station for action.

Despite their official status, the small denominations continue to face declining acceptance, often leaving consumers at a disadvantage when exact change is unavailable.
