Supreme Court’s legacy reflects strength of constitutional rule – Justice Apau

Accra, April 17, – Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Yaw Apau, has described the Supreme Court of Ghana as a longstanding pillar of justice, constitutional order and the rule of law.

He made the remarks at the official launch of the Court’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Accra.

He observed that since its establishment on March 31, 1876, the Court had played a central role in maintaining stability, interpreting the law in politically sensitive moments, and safeguarding the rights of ordinary citizens.

Justice Apau said the milestone should not only be seen as a celebration but also as a reminder of the responsibility placed on the judiciary to uphold justice without bias or external influence.

He urged judges to remain guided by integrity, independence and fairness in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, Ghana’s democratic progress had been strengthened over the years by the credibility of the Supreme Court and the impartiality of its decisions.

He also rejected claims of bribery linked to the 2012 and 2020 presidential election petition cases, describing such allegations as baseless.

Justice Apau stressed that while the judiciary carries responsibility in the present, it must also prepare for future demands with vision and adaptability.

He added that the Court must evolve to become more open and responsive while maintaining public trust.

“As we reflect on the past, we honour those who upheld justice under difficult circumstances. Looking ahead, we must commit to building a judiciary that is respected, accessible and worthy of public confidence,” he said.

He further noted that modern developments such as technology and globalisation require reforms within the justice system, including greater use of digital platforms and e-justice systems to improve efficiency and access.

Justice Apau also encouraged judicial leadership in emerging legal areas such as environmental governance, maritime law and digital regulation.

He expressed hope that the Supreme Court would continue to serve as a symbol of constitutional protection and fairness for all citizens.

A total of 2,212 cases were filed at the Supreme Court between 2020 and 2025.
